In February 1944 the German 1st Parachute Division was deployed to defend Monte Cassino, a hilltop position anchoring the Gustav Line across the Allied road to Rome. After Allied bombing destroyed the Benedictine monastery on the heights on 15 February, Fallschirmjager dug into the rubble and held the ground through months of some of the hardest fighting of the Italian campaign.
