Factory No.112 "Krasnoye Sormovo" in Gorky was a shipyard before the war, converted to tank production in 1941 and second only to Kharkov's Factory No.183 in T-34 output. Sormovo hulls are recognisable by their notched glacis to hull side joints and the round access hatch on the rear plate, and late production examples added box-shaped external fuel tanks on the engine deck rear plate along with a distinctive hourglass turret hatch. Of the 57,000 odd T-34s built during the war, roughly 34,870 carried the 76mm gun, and the Sormovo vehicles made up a significant share of them.
