The M4 was a purpose-built mortar carrier variant of the M2 halftrack, developed to give American infantry battalions a mobile 81mm mortar that could keep pace with armour. The mortar fired rearward over the back of the vehicle, with the rear compartment largely given over to ammunition racks, leaving room for only three crew. A total of 572 M4s were built before the improved M4A1 replaced them, and the type served through North Africa, Italy and northwest Europe.
