Kyle's Ultramarine Apothecary Biologis

Warhammer 40,000 - Ultramarines - Apothecary Biologis in Gravis Armour - Paint Guide

Ultramarines

The Apothecary Biologis in Gravis Armour - available in the Heroes of the Chapter set and originally debuted in the 10th edition Leviathan box. This version is deliberately painted dirtier than most Apothecary Biologis models Kyle found online for reference. The muted, off-white armour and slime-stained apron suggest a surgeon who has recently been at work - cutting into Tyranids and not bothering to clean up yet.

Every element is hand painted except the primer. Paint everything first, then wash at the end.

How Kyle Painted It

Full step-by-step breakdown. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings.

Sequence note: paint everything on the model first, then apply the final Burnt Umber wash at the end. This lets the wash unify the whole model at once rather than fighting the sequence piece by piece.

PRIMER

Mecha Grey - Neutral Base for White Armour

Grey primer rather than black - the neutral mid-tone gives Corax White better coverage and prevents the white from pulling too stark off the primer.

BASE ARMOUR

Corax White, Burnt Umber Wash to Dirty It Down

Corax White across the entire armour. Abteilung Burnt Umber thinned and washed over the whole model at the very end of the painting process, sitting heavily in the recesses. This is what shifts the white from clean and clinical to the muted, campaign-worn off-white that makes this model distinctive. Most Apothecary Biologis models online are painted brighter - this approach gives him the look of someone who has actually been at work.

Citadel Base Corax White - armour base coat and bolt pistol casing
Abteilung 502 Burnt Umber (ABT006) - final wash over entire model; heavy in recesses to produce dirty off-white armour effect
PAULDRONS

Kantor Blue with Brassy Brass Winged Symbol

Kantor Blue on the Ultramarine pauldrons. The winged metallic symbol picked out in Brassy Brass. Ultramarine chapter decal applied with Mark Fit Strong.

FOREARM ELECTRONICS

Coloured Buttons, Glowing Screens

Forearm buttons picked out individually in Averland Sunset Yellow, Magic Blue, and Mephiston Red. Screens based in Medium Olive with Camo Cloak Speedpaint glazed into the corner, then edge highlighted over with a lighter green mix to read as a backlit display screen.

Citadel Averland Sunset - yellow buttons on forearm electronics; also yellow wiring
Vallejo Game Color Magic Blue (72021) - blue buttons on forearm electronics
Citadel Base Mephiston Red - red buttons on forearm electronics; also pouch tool handle and red moss on base
Vallejo Model Color Medium Olive (70850) - screen base coat and head heraldry; also green ooze on base mixed with gloss varnish
Army Painter Speedpaint Camo Cloak - glazed into screen corners; also speckled and splattered on apron
MASTER CRAFTED BOLT PISTOL

White Casing, Leadbelcher Metallics, Black Grip

Citadel Leadbelcher - bolt pistol metallics and backpack tool blades; washed with Nuln Oil
Citadel Nuln Oil - wash over all metallics and armored cables
BACKPACK

Repositioned Tool Arms, Lights, Wiring

The tool arms were cut off and repositioned to face more forward, giving the backpack a more active, in-use posture. Tool blades in Leadbelcher, motor housings in Heavy Charcoal. The small lights are painted with Green Ink; the large yellow light in Yellow Ink with Silver covering. Armored cables in Leadbelcher washed with Nuln Oil. Yellow wiring in Averland Sunset.

LEATHER & APRON

Dark Wood Belt, Camo Cloak Apron Splatter

Belt and holster in Dark Wood Speedpaint applied over the white base. The cloth apron uses the same Dark Wood as a base with Camo Cloak Speedpaint speckled and splattered over it, applied more heavily toward the bottom to imply that the Apothecary has been cutting into Tyranids and the residue has settled lower on the apron.

Army Painter Speedpaint Dark Wood - belt, holster and apron base; applied over white base coat
SPECIMEN CONTAINERS

Sycorax Bronze Casing, Green Mystery Liquid

Container casing in Sycorax Bronze washed with Reikland Fleshshade - applied heavier on the top and bottom of the main canister to imply the middle section is a different material (glass or clear resin). The mystery liquid inside is built up by glazing Camo Cloak Speedpaint into a corner over a Medium Sea Grey base - the pooled depth creates the impression of something genuinely viscous and slightly luminescent.

Citadel Layer Sycorax Bronze - specimen container casing
Citadel Shade Reikland Fleshshade - wash over container casing; heavier on top and bottom to imply different middle material
Vallejo Model Color Medium Sea Grey (70870) - mystery liquid base inside container; also rock on base
BASE

Rock, Green Ooze, Shell Casings, Red Moss, Pipe and Rebar

Rock in Medium Sea Grey washed with Mummified Grime Speedpaint. Green ooze is Medium Olive mixed with Vallejo Gloss Clear Varnish - the gloss medium keeps it looking wet and viscous. Shell casings in Brassy Brass with no wash, left bright. Red moss is Mephiston Red mixed with Medium Sea Grey. Pipe and rebar in AK Dark Brown highlighted with AK Light Rust Enamel Wash.

Vallejo Gloss Varnish (70510) - mixed with Medium Olive for wet green ooze on base
VARNISH
