John's Starcraft Zerg Queen Paint Guide - Build Feature
John's Starcraft Zerg Queen
Archon Studio - Starcraft Zerg Queen Expansion Set - Full Paint Guide
John is back. You may know him from his Trench Crusade Sniper Priests on display in store - a painter with a real eye for atmosphere and colour. This time he tackled the Archon Studio Starcraft Zerg Queen, most of it airbrushed with his Iwata Eclipse CS with finer details finished by brush.
Rather than following the box art, John used the reference render from the StarCraft 2 wiki as his guide - leading to the more purple, violet-shifted look that is truer to how the Queen actually appears in game. The difference is immediately visible next to the box art version.

How John Painted It
Full step-by-step breakdown. Most steps airbrushed with the Iwata Eclipse CS; finer detail work finished with a brush as noted. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings.
Vallejo Surface Primer Black
Green Glow - Airbrushed Top-Down
Four airbrushed layers building from a dark base to a bright yellow-green tip - each sprayed sparingly from above to replicate the pulsating bioluminescent glow seen in game. The top-down direction means the light reads as coming from inside the pustule and illuminating the surface above. The same colour sequence is used for the eyes, finished by brush.
Airbrush technique: Each colour sprayed sparingly from directly above. Build up in small passes - check the effect after each pass before deciding to add more. The same sequence is used for the eyes, applied with a brush.
AK11048 Laser Yellow AK Interactive 3rd Gen - also used as final highlight on eyes
Hull Red Base, Violet Red to Pastel Pink Highlights
Hull Red as the base for both the carapace and the webbing. The carapace was highlighted using the same mix as the webbing. Highlights built up by brush - Hull Red mixed progressively with Violet Red, then with Pastel Pink and Glaze Medium for the final highlight pass, giving a soft violet shift that matches the in-game render. The whole surface was then washed with Burnt Umber oil paint to push depth into the recesses and unify the transitions.
Black to German Grey, Black Tips for Sharpness - Brush
Vallejo Black base, slowly blended into German Grey moving toward the body - leaving the black near the tips to imply sharpness. An Ivory Black oil paint was then used as a wash, adding a subtle cool blue undertone across the claws. All done by brush.
Vallejo Black
Muddy Ground, Leather Brown Airbrush, Pigment Mix
AK Muddy Ground applied as the base texture - if yours has dried out, rehydrate with a little water, which also produces the partial cracking effect visible in the finished base. AK Leather Brown airbrushed over the dried mud. Pigment powders then mixed and placed into the surface: 90% Vallejo Burnt Umber pigment and 10% Abteilung Industrial City Dirt, fixed with AK Pigment Fixer. Finished with tufts of your choice.
Vallejo Pigment Burnt Umber (73110) 90% + Abteilung Industrial City Dirt (ABTP039) 10%
