Bob Builds the Wizkids Giant Atlas Rhinoceros Beetle - Paint Guide
Bob Builds the Wizkids Giant Atlas Rhinoceros Beetle
Wizkids - Pre-Primed Miniature - Full Paint Guide
Bob picked up the Wizkids Giant Atlas Rhinoceros Beetle - unfortunately no longer available - and painted it using a layered metallic airbrushing approach that builds genuine depth and colour variance across the carapace. No single colour, no flat coat - instead a sequence of thinned metallics, selective washes and a careful final unifier that holds the whole thing together without killing the shine.
The model comes pre-primed from Wizkids, so no additional primer step is needed - you go straight to paint.

How Bob Painted It
Full step-by-step breakdown. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings unless noted.
Thinning and Flow - Bob's Setup and Alternative
All airbrushing in this build uses Vallejo Airbrush Thinner with a drop(s) of Flow Improver added to the mix until tip dry is at a manageable level. The Army Painter Airbrush Medium is a convenient pre-mixed alternative that combines thinner and flow improver in one bottle.
Gloss Black Base - Thinned Heavy to Wash Into Recesses
Vallejo Gloss Black thinned heavily and airbrushed over the whole model. At this dilution the paint largely drops into the recesses of the carapace detail, almost acting as a glossy wash - but it also grabs to the high points of the surface. The gloss base is what gives the subsequent metallic layers their depth and reflectivity.
Hydra Turquoise - Sparse Green Depth
Vallejo TMM Hydra Turquoise misted sparingly over the black base to build green depth into the carapace. The coverage is deliberately light - small sprays, check the effect, decide whether to stop or add another pass. The goal is colour suggestion, not full coverage.
Rusty Metal - Catching High Points from Distance
Vallejo TMM Rusty Metal airbrushed from roughly double the usual spraying distance. At that range the paint catches only the highest points of the surface detail and falls off toward the recesses, creating a natural tonal shift that reads differently under different light sources and from different angles. The key is finding the right distance - far enough that the paint hits only the peaks, close enough that it doesn't dry mid-air before reaching the model.
Black Wash - Re-Establishing Carapace Separation
Vallejo Model Wash Black applied specifically into the deep recesses where the carapace sections meet. The previous metallic steps can muddy fine separation lines - this wash re-establishes and emphasises that detail, bringing the carapace definition back to where it needs to be.
Old Gold and Blue Grey Wash - Colour Variance and Unifier
Two things happen in this final step. Old Gold is applied carefully and almost dry-brushed into the recesses, horns, and legs - particularly near the feet. Adding another metallic colour variance builds believability and prevents the carapace reading as a single uniform tone. The more colour temperatures at play, the more convincing the result.
Blue Grey wash is then applied carefully over the entire beetle to unify all the colours and hues across the carapace. Thinned enough that it doesn't knock back the metallic quality of the surface - it sits on top as a colour filter, pulling the green, rust, gold and black into a single coherent read.
Garden Assortment, Basing Glue and Mod Podge
Bob sourced the base materials from his own garden - an assortment of natural debris fixed down with Army Painter Basing Glue and Mod Podge. Mod Podge is a craft store product not carried at Wheels and Wings, but widely available at any craft retailer.
