Lockheed built the C-141 Starlifter as the U.S. Air Force’s first jet-powered strategic airlifter. It first flew in 1963 and carried troops and cargo for the Military Airlift Command through Vietnam and beyond. Crews soon found the cargo hold filled up with bulky loads well before the aircraft reached its weight limit. Between 1979 and 1982, 270 aircraft were stretched by about 23 feet and fitted with in-flight refuelling receptacles, which turned them into C-141Bs. The 62nd Airlift Wing at McChord AFB, Washington, flew the type for decades, and the last Starlifters retired in 2006.
