The Yak-9P was the final production development of the Yakovlev Yak-9 line, introduced from 1946 as an all-metal postwar fighter derived from the Yak-9U. Armament was standardised on a nose cannon firing through the propeller hub with two synchronised cannon above the engine, and the type served with Soviet units before being widely exported. North Korean Yak-9Ps flew against USAF aircraft in the opening weeks of the Korean War in 1950.
