HMS Repulse was a Royal Navy Renown-class battlecruiser, launched in 1916 and built for high speed at the expense of heavy armour. She served in the First World War and was extensively refitted between the wars, then patrolled the Atlantic and escorted convoys early in the Second World War before transferring to the Far East. Assigned to Force Z alongside the new battleship HMS Prince of Wales, she was sunk by Japanese land-based torpedo and high-level bombers off Malaya on 10 December 1941 while trying to intercept Japanese landings, with the loss of 508 of her crew. The action is widely remembered as the first time capital ships underway at sea were sunk solely by air power, marking the decline of the battleship era.
