The Boulton Paul Defiant was a two-seat RAF fighter designed around a four-gun power-operated dorsal turret and no forward-firing armament, entering service in 1939. Initially effective against Luftwaffe bombers during the Dunkirk evacuation, it proved highly vulnerable to single-seat fighters once German pilots identified its lack of forward guns, and was quickly withdrawn from day operations during the Battle of Britain. The Mk.I was subsequently redeployed as a night fighter with considerable success before being replaced by the Beaufighter and Mosquito.
