The Curtiss Hawk 81-A-2 was the export version of the P-40B. One hundred were diverted from a British Tomahawk order to the American Volunteer Group, the famous “Flying Tigers,” who flew them for China against Japan in 1941 and 1942. Led by Claire Chennault, the AVG relied on hit-and-run tactics that made the most of the Hawk’s speed in a dive and its rugged build. The pilots claimed nearly 300 victories, and the shark mouth on the nose became one of the most famous aircraft markings of the war. Tomahawks also flew in Canada’s war, serving with the RCAF’s 400 and 403 Squadrons overseas in 1941.
