Description
AIR492 - Airfix 1/72 Vigilante - WWWEB10109787
Preowned, Resealed, Mint
The North American A-5 Vigilante (originally designated A3J) was a large carrier-based supersonic bomber built for the U.S. Navy, first flown on 31 August 1958 and entering service in 1961 as a Mach 2 nuclear strike aircraft to succeed the A-3 Skywarrior. It featured an unusual linear bomb bay that ejected its weapon rearward between the engines, and at the time it was one of the largest and fastest aircraft ever to operate from a carrier deck. The nuclear strike role was short-lived as the Navy shifted to submarine-launched missiles, so most Vigilantes were built or rebuilt as the RA-5C reconnaissance variant, which served extensively through the Vietnam War before the type retired in 1979.
