The Ilyushin Il-28 was the Soviet Union's first mass-produced jet bomber, entering service in 1950 and assigned the NATO reporting name "Beagle." Powered by two Klimov VK-1 turbojets, it was a simple and rugged design armed with twin fixed forward 23mm cannon and a manned tail turret, and it served widely with the Soviet Union, China, and more than a dozen allied air forces. Several thousand were built, and the type remained in service for decades, broadly comparable in role to the English Electric Canberra.
