The Buccaneer S.2B was the RAF's primary low-level strike aircraft through the 1970s and 1980s, powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans and optimised for high-speed terrain-following attacks with a nuclear or conventional bomb load carried in an internal rotating bomb door. Originally a Royal Navy carrier aircraft, the S.2B was transferred to RAF service following the cancellation of the F-111 and saw front-line service with Nos. 12, 15, 16, and 208 Squadrons in Germany and Scotland before retiring in 1994. The type's final operational highlight came during the 1991 Gulf War, where Buccaneers performed laser designation for Tornado GR1 strikes.
