De Havilland Canada designed the DHC-2 Beaver to a specification drawn up from surveys of Canadian bush pilots, who wanted power, short field performance and doors wide enough to take an oil drum. It first flew in August 1947 and 1,657 were built, serving with more than twenty air forces as well as bush operators worldwide. The US Army bought it in quantity as the L-20A, later U-6A, where it proved invaluable for communication and casualty evacuation, and British Army Air Corps Beavers flew the same kind of work.
