The Junkers Ju 88 first flew in December 1936. It was designed as a fast bomber and became one of the most versatile aircraft of the Second World War, serving as a level bomber, dive bomber, night fighter, heavy fighter, reconnaissance aircraft and torpedo bomber. Early A-series Ju 88s fought in the Battle of Britain. The A-4, which entered service in 1941, brought a longer wingspan, stronger defensive armament and more powerful Jumo engines, and it became the main bomber version. About 15,000 Ju 88s of all types were built. This Airfix kit, made in France from the Heller mould, builds a Luftwaffe Ju 88A-4 with the option of extended or retracted landing gear.
