The Sd.Kfz.231 8-Rad was the Wehrmacht's heavy armoured car for reconnaissance. Built on a Büssing-NAG chassis from 1937, it had eight-wheel drive and eight-wheel steering. It could be driven from either end, with a second driving position at the rear that let it pull back fast without turning around. Early vehicles carried a 2cm KwK 30 and a coaxial MG13 in a fully enclosed turret. The 8-Rad led the armoured reconnaissance battalions in Poland, France and Russia and with the Afrika Korps in North Africa.
