The Spitfire Mk.XIV was the first major production variant powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, entering service in early 1944 and proving significantly faster than its Merlin-powered predecessors. The FR.Mk.XIVe was the dedicated fighter-reconnaissance sub-variant, fitted with a rear-fuselage F.24 oblique camera, clipped wings for improved low-altitude maneuverability, and a bubble canopy for all-round visibility. Armed with two 20mm cannon and two 12.7mm machine guns, it served with the RAF through the final year of the war in Europe.
