The Hawker Siddeley Nimrod was developed from the de Havilland Comet -- the world's first jet airliner -- as a maritime patrol and submarine-hunting aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Entering service in 1969, it served in the MR.2 maritime reconnaissance variant and the R.1 signals intelligence variant, seeing operational use during the 1982 Falklands War and subsequently in the Gulf region. The Nimrod remained in RAF service until 2011.
