The Avro Anson was the RAF’s first monoplane with retractable landing gear. It began as a coastal reconnaissance aircraft in 1936 and went on to become one of the great training aircraft of the Second World War, with more than 11,000 built. Canada built many of its own Ansons, and the type was the backbone of navigator and aircrew training in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. This boxing shows a rarer side of the Anson’s career with the Free French Air Force. Groupe Artois flew Ansons on coastal patrol from Pointe Noire in French Equatorial Africa, and the kit tells the story of Czech navigator Josef Hnátek, who flew 63 missions with the unit.
