The A30 Challenger was a British cruiser tank built on a lengthened Cromwell chassis to mount the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun in a tall rotating turret. Developed to give Cromwell-equipped units a tank capable of defeating heavy German armour, it served from 1944 alongside reconnaissance regiments in northwest Europe. Its high silhouette and limited numbers made it a stopgap until the Sherman Firefly and later designs took over the role.
