The Bell P-63 Kingcobra was developed from the P-39 Airacobra to address that aircraft's combat limitations, featuring a laminar-flow wing, revised tail surfaces, and the Allison V-1710 engine mounted amidships driving a nose-mounted propeller via an extension shaft. Rejected for front-line USAAF combat use, the P-63A became the primary variant delivered to the Soviet Air Force under Lend-Lease, where 2,400+ were operated extensively on the Eastern Front. A small number also served with the Free French Air Force.
