The Airbus A320 was the aircraft that brought fly by wire and sidestick controls to the mainstream short haul market, entering service in 1988 and going on to become one of the best selling airliners ever built. Air Berlin grew from a small charter operation into Germany's second largest carrier, and by the late 2000s the A320 family formed the core of its fleet on leisure and scheduled routes across Europe. The airline ceased flying in 2017, which makes its bold red and white scheme a nostalgic subject for the airliner shelf.
