The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the world's first operational jet fighter, entering Luftwaffe service in 1944 and powered by twin Junkers Jumo 004 turbojets. The A-1a/U3 was a dedicated reconnaissance (Aufklärer) variant, with cameras fitted in a modified nose in place of the standard cannon armament for high-speed photographic missions. Its speed made it nearly impossible for Allied piston-engine fighters to intercept.
