The Me 262 B-1a was the two-seat conversion trainer version of the world's first operational jet fighter. In the closing months of the war a small number were converted into provisional night fighters as the B-1a/U1, fitted with FuG 218 Neptun radar and its distinctive eight-dipole Hirschgeweih antenna array in the nose. The radar installation displaced fuel, so the aircraft carried two 300 litre drop tanks beneath the forward fuselage. Only a handful reached service, chiefly with NJG 11 over Berlin in 1945.
