The A300-600ST Beluga was Airbus's answer to a problem of its own making. With wings built in Britain, fuselage sections in Germany and final assembly in France, the company needed an aircraft capable of swallowing outsized components whole. The solution grafted an enormous upper cargo lobe and a hinged nose door onto an A300-600 airframe, producing one of the most distinctive shapes in aviation and earning the whale nickname immediately. Five were built and flew Airbus's internal logistics from 1995 until the larger BelugaXL took over.
