OT2-8 - OTAKI 1/48 Type 93 Intermediate Trainer K5Y1 Willow WWHP112865
Preowned, Resealed, Mint
The Yokosuka K5Y — Allied reporting name "Willow" — was the Imperial Japanese Navy's standard intermediate trainer from 1934 through the end of World War II, with over 5,700 built across multiple manufacturers. A two-seat, unequal-span biplane, it was universally painted bright orange for visibility, earning the affectionate Japanese nickname aka-tombo ("red dragonfly"). The type trained the majority of IJN aviators during the war, and saw use in a variety of roles including, in 1945, kamikaze attacks — a K5Y being credited with sinking USS Callaghan, the last US warship lost to kamikaze action. Otaki originally tooled this kit in 1972; the OT2-8 designation covers subsequent reboxes through the mid-1980s.
