The March-Porsche was one of the most technically ambitious entries in late 1980s CART racing, pairing the proven March chassis with Porsche's purpose-built turbocharged V8 Indy engine in a factory-backed programme. The Quaker State-sponsored car, running number 8, was a high-profile entry that reflected both Porsche's considerable engineering resources and the intense factory competition that characterised the CART/PPG Indy Car World Series of the era. While the Porsche Indy programme ultimately fell short of expectations against the entrenched Cosworth and Chevrolet runners, the green Quaker State livery remains one of the more recognisable colour schemes from that period of open-wheel racing.
