Porsche built the 917/10 for the North American Can-Am series by turning its Le Mans-winning 917 into an open-top sports racer, then adding a turbocharged flat-12 that made close to 1,000 hp. Team Penske ran the car in 1972 with L&M sponsorship. Mark Donohue was set to drive it, but he was hurt in a testing crash, so George Follmer stepped in and won the championship. That ended McLaren’s five-year hold on the title and started Porsche’s turbo domination of Can-Am.
