The Boeing 737-400 was the largest of the Classic generation, stretching the 737-300 by a further three metres to seat up to 168 passengers on high density short haul routes. Powered by CFM56 turbofans and first delivered in 1988, it filled the gap between the -300 and the ageing 727 fleets and sold strongly to US majors and European charter operators. US Airways was one of the type's significant North American customers, flying the -400 in the dark blue and red scheme worn by N443US on the box art. The last -400s left mainline passenger service in the 2010s, with a number carrying on as freighters.
