The Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak was a straight-wing turbojet research aircraft developed jointly by the U.S. Navy and NACA (the predecessor to NASA) in the late 1940s to investigate high-speed transonic flight characteristics. Powered by an Allison J35 turbojet and finished in its distinctive bright orange-red paint scheme for high visibility during test flights, the Skystreak set world airspeed records in 1947, reaching over 1,000 km/h. Three aircraft were built and flown from Muroc Dry Lake (later Edwards Air Force Base), providing critical aerodynamic data that fed directly into the design of subsequent jet combat aircraft.
