The Pfalz D.III was a German single-seat biplane fighter that entered service with the Imperial German Air Service in late 1917, distinguished by its semi-monocoque plywood fuselage construction at a time when most contemporaries used fabric-covered frameworks. Though generally considered inferior to the Fokker Dr.I and Albatros D.V in climb rate and manoeuvrability, the Pfalz D.III was well-liked by its pilots for its sturdy construction and good diving characteristics, and it served in significant numbers on the Western Front through 1918. The D.IIIa was an upgraded version with a more powerful Mercedes D.IIIau engine and revised tail surfaces.
