The Vickers Wellington was the RAF's primary twin-engine heavy bomber in the early years of the Second World War, distinguished by its unique geodetic airframe construction designed by Barnes Wallis — a lattice-work structure that gave the aircraft exceptional strength and the ability to absorb substantial battle damage and still return home. The Mk.X was the most-produced variant, powered by Bristol Hercules radial engines, while the Mk.XIV was a specialised Coastal Command anti-submarine variant fitted with search radar and depth charges. Wellingtons flew extensively over Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean from 1939 through to the end of the war.
