The SPAD VII was one of the finest Allied fighters of World War I, introduced in late 1916 and powered by the Hispano-Suiza V-8 engine, prized for its speed, strength, and diving performance. It was flown by many of France's top aces including Guynemer and Fonck, and was supplied to Allied air services including the RFC, the American Expeditionary Forces, and volunteer squadrons of American pilots flying with French units before the US entered the war. The 103rd Aero Squadron — successor to the famous Lafayette Escadrille — was among the most prominent American units to operate the type.
