The F-14 Tomcat was the U.S. Navy's premier carrier-based fleet defence fighter from 1974 until its retirement in 2006, famous for its variable-sweep wings and the AWG-9 radar system capable of tracking and engaging multiple targets simultaneously with AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. It entered popular culture through the 1986 film Top Gun and remains one of the most recognisable naval aircraft of the Cold War era.
