The "Birdcage" nickname comes from the F4U-1's heavily framed greenhouse canopy — a feature Vought replaced on later production aircraft after pilots complained about restricted visibility. The early F4U-1 had a troubled introduction to carrier service for exactly that reason, initially finding more success with Marine Corps land-based squadrons in the Solomons before the Navy sorted out its deck-landing quirks.

Hasegawa's C14 covers this early variant specifically, with decal options for VMF-215 "Spirit of 76" (August 1943) and VF-17 aboard USS Bunker Hill (July 1943). Nicely moulded kit with fine raised panel lines, good engine and cockpit detail for the scale, and recessed control surface lines. A reliable Corsair build that held its own as the go-to option in 1/72 for years.
