The Aichi B7A Ryusei was designed to combine the torpedo bomber and dive bomber roles in a single carrier aircraft, replacing both the B6N Tenzan and the D4Y Suisei. Its demanding specification, calling for an internal bomb bay, 20mm armament and fighter-like manoeuvrability, produced a large aircraft with a distinctive inverted gull wing and the powerful Homare engine. Only 111 were built, and by the time the type was ready the Imperial Japanese Navy had no carriers left for it, so the Ryusei served from land bases with the Yokosuka and 752nd Kokutai.
