The A6M5c Type 52 Hei was one of the final and most heavily armed Zero variants, replacing the outboard 20mm wing cannon with two 13mm heavy machine guns to counter the increasing threat of American aircraft. The 721st Kokutai (Flying Group) was a dedicated special attack unit formed in late 1944, operating Zeros painted in a distinctive dark green scheme with black engine cowlings for tokko (kamikaze) missions during the Philippines and Okinawa campaigns. Approximately 6,000 Type 52 Zeros were produced across all sub-variants, fighting until the final days of the war.
