The Ki-84 Hayate ("Gale") was considered the best Japanese Army fighter of WWII, fast enough to intercept B-29s and capable of matching the P-51 Mustang and F6F Hellcat at altitude. Powered by a Nakajima Ha-45 radial engine and armed with two 20mm cannon and two 12.7mm machine guns, it entered combat in 1944 and served across China, the Philippines, and in the defence of the Japanese home islands.
