The T-72 entered Soviet service in 1973 as a simpler and more producible companion to the T-64, pairing a 125 mm smoothbore gun with a carousel autoloader that reduced the crew to three. The T-72M1 was the improved export pattern, adding thickened glacis armour and revised turret protection, and it was licence produced in Poland, Czechoslovakia, India and elsewhere. Large numbers remained in service across the Warsaw Pact and Middle East well after the T-80 arrived.
