The Sikorsky UH-60A Black Hawk entered US Army service in 1979 as the replacement for the UH-1 Iroquois in the squad assault transport role. Powered by two General Electric T700 turboshafts driving a four-blade main rotor, it carries a crew of three plus eleven fully equipped troops in a crashworthy airframe designed for air transportability. Fitting the External Stores Support System allowed the type to carry auxiliary fuel tanks or ordnance on stub pylons.
