The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was built as a Zerstörer, a twin-engined long-range heavy fighter meant to clear the way for German bombers. The Bf 110C, powered by two Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines, was the main production version in 1939 and 1940. It did well over Poland and France but suffered heavy losses against Spitfires and Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain. The Bf 110D was a long-range version that carried extra fuel in drop tanks or a large belly tank. Zerstörergeschwader such as ZG 26 and ZG 76 flew both versions from Norway to the Mediterranean.
