The Harrier was the world's first operational V/STOL combat jet, and the AV-8A was the single-seat version adopted by the US Marine Corps from the British Hawker Siddeley design under a McDonnell Douglas licence arrangement. Spain's Armada Española operated a closely related variant, the AV-8S, locally named "Matador," flying it from the carrier Dédalo beginning in 1976. ESCI's 1984 tooling was well regarded for its engraved panel lines and was later reboxed by AMT/ERTL and Italeri.
