The Albatros J.I was a dedicated infantry support aircraft, built from 1917 to fly low over the Western Front trenches where ground fire made ordinary two-seaters highly vulnerable. Developed from Albatros's C-series reconnaissance types, it enclosed the crew in a fuselage armoured with 5 mm steel plate and carried two Spandau machine guns angled downward at 45 degrees for strafing, plus a Parabellum gun on a ring mount for the observer. Around 240 were built from autumn 1917, and several survived the war to serve in the Polish-Soviet War of 1919 and 1920. Choroszy Modelbud's limited-run 1/72 resin kit captures this unusual armoured biplane in German service.
