Kyle's World Eater Paint Guide - Chaos Legionnaire Build Feature
Kyle's World Eater - Sons of Angron
Warhammer 40,000 - World Eaters - Chaos Legionnaire - Paint Guide
Kyle painted one of the marines from the Chaos Space Marines Legionaries kit as a World Eater around the time of the World Eaters' first dedicated miniature release. He had just been reading a Warhammer novel featuring an encounter with a World Eater Legionnaire - a description he interpreted as sounding like a chainsaw over a TTC PA system, and a figure absolutely covered in gore and lost in a trance of rage.
This model is his attempt to bring that visual to life. The Sons of Angron.
Blood for the Blood God!

How Kyle Painted It
Full step-by-step breakdown. All products in stock at Wheels and Wings.
Sequence note: complete the full model and apply the satin varnish first. Apply the blood and gore effect after the final varnish coat so the blood retains its wet, glossy finish against the sealed satin surface beneath.
Black Base
Burnt Red Main Coat, Tamiya Black Panel Lines
Vallejo Burnt Red across all armour surfaces - the backpack follows the same base colour. If you have an old bottle of discontinued Vallejo Terracotta it works equally well here. Panel lines done with Tamiya Black Panel Line Accent Colour for tighter, more controlled line work on the red armour.
Vallejo Bronze with Reikland Fleshshade
White Base, Fluorescent Orange Glow
Corax White line on the lens, then Fluorescent Orange glazed over. The same process is used on the backpack skull eyes - consistent glow colour across every emissive element on the model. The chaos symbol on the bolt pistol uses the same white-then-orange technique.
Black Casing, Leadbelcher Metallics, Sycorax Shell Casings
Metal Under the Blood, Khaki Bar and Bone Spikes
Leadbelcher and Nuln Oil on the chainsword metallics, with Bronze underneath the blood. The chain bar is painted Khaki and the back spikes in Khaki as bone - staying true to the World Eater obsession with bone and skulls. Skulls for the Skull Throne.
Khaki with Thinned Agrax Wash
Earth Base, Agrax Wash, Khaki Highlight
Heavy Charcoal
Burnt Red Body, Leadbelcher Exhausts, Skull Eyes and Blood Vents
Backpack body in the same Burnt Red as the armour with matching gold trim. Exhausts in Leadbelcher highlighted with Silver. The skull eyes on the backpack receive the same white-then-orange glow treatment as the helmet eyes. Blood and gore mix is applied to the exhaust vents as well - implying the air around this Legionnaire has been thick with blood mist for a long time.
Rear - backpack vent gore and skull
Back left - vents, skull and chainsword
Tamiya Clear Red and Smoke - Applied After Varnish
Tamiya Clear Red mixed with Tamiya Clear Smoke to darken the blood effect - add the smoke gradually to your desired depth of colour. The smoke shifts it from a bright, toy-like red toward a darker, more convincing dried and fresh blood look. Applied with a brush using a flicking motion to speckle it across the armour.
Applied heavily to the chainsword, the helmet spike, and the mask. The right shin and right shoulder spike also receive heavier application to imply the Legionnaire has been shoulder-checking and kicking his way through combat. The backpack exhaust vents get the mix too.
Base note: the blood mix is also used on the base as an attempt at rivers of blood - use less Tamiya Smoke in the base mix than in the armour ratio, as the contrast of the base colour means the same ratio will read darker than intended. The effect came out browner than planned - and was left as-is.
Critical sequence: apply the blood and gore effect after the final satin varnish coat. This keeps the blood glossy and wet-looking against the sealed satin armour surface. If you varnish over the blood it will dull the effect.
Neighbourhood Gravel, Rivers of Blood
Gravel collected from the neighbourhood, secured with PVA. The blood mix stretched out across the base surface at an attempt at rivers of blood - use a lighter ratio of Clear Smoke here than on the armour.
