Tamiya 24090 with muffler from 24341 - 1/24 Car - Full Build Feature

1/24 Car

Farhan's first time airbrushing. He decided to tackle a version of his favourite car - the R32 Skyline GT-R. He had been painting with rattle cans for a while and decided to take the leap after picking up an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS - the airbrush we hand to everyone starting out and the staff airbrush of choice for most general work.

He got straight to work experimenting with the main body colour. After a few days he sent us a picture of the car body he had achieved by mixing Tamiya lacquers and acrylics together. The results speak for themselves - especially for a first time airbrush project.

The Main Kit: TAM24090 - Tamiya - 1/24 Nissan Skyline GT-R

BODY COLOUR

Farhan spent a few days experimenting before landing on this body colour - a custom mix of Tamiya LP47 Pearl Blue, X-13 Metallic Blue, and a drop of X-1 Gloss Black. The results speak for themselves.

Tamiya LP-47 Pearl Blue (lacquer) - body colour base component
Tamiya X-13 Gloss Metallic Blue (acrylic) - body colour main component
Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black (acrylic) - one drop added to the body colour mix to deepen the tone
ENGINE

Titanium Gold Cover, Chrome Turbo and Manifold, Markers for Details

Engine cover in Titanium Gold. Turbo outer casing and intake manifold in Chrome Silver. Front rad support and fan painted with the AK Flat White marker. Front support beam in the Gundam Gun Metal marker.

Tamiya LP-62 Titanium Gold (lacquer) - engine cover; also wheel rims
Tamiya X-11 Gloss Chrome Silver (acrylic) - turbo outer casing and intake manifold; also brake rotors, exhaust pipe and rear light backing
WHEELS & BRAKES

LIGHTS

Clear Orange and Red Enamels, Chrome Silver Backing on Rear Lights

Lights brush painted with Tamiya enamel clear colours. For the rear lights, Chrome Silver is applied to the back side of the light part so it shines naturally through the clear red from behind - adding the metallic hint needed to make the lights read convincingly.

Tamiya EX-26 Gloss Clear Orange (enamel) - indicator and orange light lenses; brush painted
Tamiya EX-27 Gloss Clear Red (enamel) - rear light lenses; brush painted over Chrome Silver backing
UNDERSIDE

Flat Black, Straight Pipe Exhaust, Rubber Black Engine Shield

Underside in Flat Black. The muffler from kit 24341 was cut and modified as a straight pipe. Exhaust pipe in Chrome Silver, touched up with the AK Aluminium marker where the paint did not fully cover. Engine shield painted with the AK Rubber Black marker.

AK Real Colors Marker - Aluminium (RCM010) - touch-up on exhaust pipe where Chrome Silver did not fully cover
AK Real Colors Marker - Rubber Black (RCM001) - engine shield and seat interiors
CARBON FIBRE TOP

Scale Motorsport Carbon Fibre Decal, Two Coats of Gloss Clear

Carbon fibre decal from Scale Motorsport applied to the roof. On curved areas the sheet had trouble staying flat - Tamiya Decal Adhesive Softener was used to get it to conform and adhere. Two coats of Mr. Hobby UV Cut Gloss applied after the decal to seal and protect it.

Tamiya Decal Adhesive Softener Type (87193) - used on curved sections where the carbon fibre sheet would not stay flat
REAR WING

Tamiya Detail-Up Parts - Japan Exclusive (for now)

The rear wing is from a Tamiya detail-up parts set that Farhan sourced on his trip to Japan. It is not currently available in North America - yet. Fitted out of box, unpainted.
