Citadel Technical Paints — Warhammer Colour

Complete listing · Texture pastes · Special effects · Mediums & varnishes

Specialist effects for the finishing stage

Citadel Technical paints are specialist products used at the finishing stage of a model or base — each one does something no standard paint can replicate. The 24 products in this range span four categories: texture pastes for fast, realistic basing with no additional materials; crackle effects for dried mud and wasteland terrain; special effects including blood, corrosion, slime, and gemstones; and mediums and varnishes for adjusting other paints and protecting finished models.

Most Technical paints are 24ml; the four effect paints (Blood for the Blood God, Nihilakh Oxide, Nurgle's Rot, and Typhus Corrosion) come in 12ml pots at a lower price. Click any SKU to check stock and add to basket.

Texture Pastes

Applied with a texture spreader or old brush directly to a base. Dries with built-in grit, sand, or rock texture. Drybrush once dry to complete.

SKU Product Warhammer Application & Use
CIT27-26
Stirland Mud
Named for Stirland — the marshy, undead-haunted province of the Old World. Fine-grained brown earth texture paste. The most widely used basing texture in the Warhammer hobby — produces a convincing muddy, earthy base with embedded fine grit. Apply 2–3mm thick over a base, allow to dry, drybrush with Tyrant Skull, Terminatus Stone, or Screaming Skull for completed ground cover. Ideal for Death Guard, Nurgle, and any army fighting in muddy, corrupted terrain.
CIT27-27
Stirland Battlemire
A coarser, chunkier version of Stirland Mud with larger aggregate pieces. Produces a rougher, more textured earth and broken battlefield ground. Better for large bases, cavalry, and monster bases where fine-grained mud would look too smooth. Particularly effective for Sylvaneth, Ogor Mawtribes, and any Age of Sigmar army with a wild, untamed wilderness base theme. Drybrush identically to Stirland Mud once dry.
CIT27-30
Astrogranite
Dark grey granite-effect texture. Produces a dense, stone-like surface with visible aggregate — the standard basing texture for Space Marines, Adeptus Mechanicus, Grey Knights, and any army based in urban ruins or stone environments. Also excellent for dungeon floor terrain, fortress bases, and the rubble of bombed-out hive city streets. Drybrush with Dawnstone and Administratum Grey to complete.
CIT27-31
Astrogranite Debris
Chunkier version of Astrogranite with larger stone fragments. Produces a broken, rubble-strewn surface — the urban battlefield in ruins. Best for large infantry bases and vehicle bases where a fine stone texture would look too uniform. Produces the look of shattered rockcrete and ferrocrete that defines hive city and fortress environments in Warhammer 40k. Drybrush with Dawnstone and Administratum Grey or Longbeard Grey.
CIT27-28
Armageddon Dust
Named for Armageddon — the war-scarred industrial world of the Astra Militarum. Light sandy-grey dust texture. Produces a fine, dry, arid-dust surface — the ash wastes and desert plains of Armageddon and similar scorched worlds. The go-to texture for Steel Legion, Tallarn Desert Raiders, Tau Sept armoured forces, and any model based in an ash waste or volcanic dust environment. Drybrush with Tyrant Skull or Underhive Ash to complete.
CIT27-29
Armageddon Dunes
Warm sandy-tan texture with slightly coarser aggregate than Armageddon Dust. Produces a warm desert dune surface — the sandy plains of desert worlds, Tomb Kings ruins, and Necron tomb complexes. The warmer tone suits Ossiarch Bonereapers, Necrons, Astra Militarum desert regiments, and Age of Sigmar armies based in Shyish or Hysh desert realms. Drybrush with Terminatus Stone and Screaming Skull.
CIT27-24
Martian Ironearth
Vivid, rusty red crackle-texture. Produces a hard, cracked, iron-oxide red surface — the arid, cracked plains of Mars or any volcanic, iron-rich world. Beloved by Adeptus Mechanicus players for their Mars-based chapter, and also used for Khorne battlefield basing (blood-red cracked earth suits the World Eaters and Khorne Bloodbound). Apply thickly and allow to dry fully before drybrushing with Ryza Rust and a final Kindleflame drybrush.
CIT27-25
Martian Ironcrust
A coarser-crackle, darker red-brown companion to Martian Ironearth. Produces a denser, more heavily fractured surface — suitable for deeper cracked terrain, Daemon World bases, and volcanic crust. Often layered over Martian Ironearth for added depth. The larger crack pattern and darker tone make it particularly effective on larger bases (cavalry, Dreadnoughts, monsters) where fine cracks would be invisible from tabletop distance.
CIT27-22
Agrellan Earth
Named for Agrella — a parched wasteland world. Light tan crackle-texture. Produces a fine-cracked, sun-baked desert earth — dried mud, clay pan, and cracked wasteland. More subtle crack pattern than Mordant Earth. Used for desert-world Astra Militarum, Necron dry tomb environments, Tau arid planet schemes, and any army in an arid or sun-scorched setting. Drybrush with Terminatus Stone and Tyrant Skull for a convincing dry earth finish.
CIT27-23
Agrellan Badland
A darker, more orange-brown crackle companion to Agrellan Earth. Produces a deeper, ochre-cracked badlands surface — hotter and more oxidised than Agrellan Earth. Suits Necromunda underhive waste grounds, Ork desert warbands, and Seraphon jungle earth bases. Often combined with Agrellan Earth in patches across the same base for natural variation in baked earth tone.
CIT27-21
Mordant Earth
Named for the Mordant — a cannibalistic Astra Militarum regiment. Dark grey-brown with a very dramatic crack pattern. Produces the widest, most severe cracks in the Technical range — ideal for Nurgle-corrupted terrain, Chaos Daemon World bases, volcanic igneous rock, and deeply fractured wasteland. Can also be applied over a dried paint surface to crack the paint layer itself — a weathering effect for vehicles and terrain boards. Drybrush with Dawnstone and Administratum Grey.
CIT27-32
Valhallan Blizzard
Named for Valhalla — the ice world of the Valhallan Ice Warriors Astra Militarum regiment. White, translucent snow-and-ice texture with a slight sparkle. Produces a convincing windswept snowdrift or icy surface — apply on top of a completed base in irregular patches and drifts against rocks, boots, and base edges. The definitive snow basing product for Space Wolves, Valhallan Guard, Beastclaw Raiders Ogors, and any army themed around frozen worlds and icy battlefields.

Special Effects

Finishing effects applied at the very end of a project — gore, corrosion, slime, gemstones, and glowing energy.

SKU Product Warhammer Application & Use
CIT27-05
Blood for the Blood God
Named for the iconic Khorne battle-cry. A translucent, glossy red gel that dries with a wet, glistening appearance exactly like fresh blood. Arguably the most characterful Technical paint in the range. Applied over dried paint — brush over blades, claws, and wounds of Khorne Berserkers, Chaos Warriors, Bloodletters, and any melee-focused model for instant, convincing gore. Also used for pooled blood effects on bases and terrain. Available in 12ml at $4.95.
CIT27-10
Typhus Corrosion
Named for Typhus — the Death Guard Herald of Nurgle. A dark, gritty brown-black textured paste that simulates rust, corrosion, and grime. Applied to metallic surfaces before drybrushing with Ryza Rust Dry paint — together these two products create the definitive rust effect. Used on Death Guard armour, Chaos vehicles, Ork machinery, and any corroded metal surface. Also adds grime and fouling inside Nurgle wound cavities and on corrupted armour joints. 12ml at $4.95.
CIT27-09
Nurgle's Rot
Named for Nurgle — the Chaos God of Disease. A translucent, glossy yellow-green gel that dries with a thick, viscous, mucous-like appearance. Applied inside the wounds and pustules of Nurgle daemons (Plaguebearers, Great Unclean Ones, Beasts of Nurgle), Death Guard Plague Marines, and the toxic slime trails on Nurgle's Rot-afflicted terrain. The single product most associated with the Nurgle aesthetic — no Chaos/Nurgle army is complete without it. 12ml at $4.95.
CIT27-06
Nihilakh Oxide
Named for the Nihilakh — a major Necron Dynasty known for its gold and teal colour scheme. A translucent, matte verdigris (copper oxide patina) in teal-green. Applied over Warplock Bronze, Screaming Bell, or Runelord Brass after shading — floods into the recesses and textured areas of bronze surfaces to simulate centuries-old corrosion. The defining Technical paint for aged, antique bronze on Necrons, Chaos daemons, and Age of Sigmar ruins and relics. 12ml at $4.95.
CIT27-35
Tesseract Glow
Named for the Tesseract Labyrinth — a Necron dimensional prison weapon. A luminescent, translucent green-yellow. Applied over a white or very bright silver surface it produces an eerie, energy-glowing finish — the specific effect of Necron Soul Vaults, Tesseract pylons, and trapped souls. Also used for warpstone Skaven energy effects, Nighthaunt spectral soul energy, and any supernatural glow effect that needs to look genuinely lit from within.
CIT27-12
Spiritstone Red
Named for the Spiritstone — the psychically active gemstones worn by Aeldari to capture the souls of the dead. A translucent, jewel-like red applied over a white base coat or silver to create a glowing gemstone effect. The definitive gem-effect Technical for red gems on Aeldari models, Chaos lord rubies, bloodstone effects, and any jewel or crystal surface needing a deep, luminous red finish. Apply over white paint in the gem recess for best results. 12ml at $4.95.
CIT27-13
Soulstone Blue
Named for the Soulstone — the blue variant of Aeldari soul-gems. A deep, translucent blue that creates a glowing sapphire or energy crystal effect over white or silver base coats. Used for blue gems on Aeldari Spiritseers and Seers, power weapon energy cores, Stormcast Eternal celestium jewels, and any bright blue gem or crystal. The blue counterpart to Spiritstone Red in the gem-effect Technical range. 12ml at $4.95.
CIT27-14
Waystone Green
Named for the Waystone — the network of psychic relay stones that criss-cross the Aeldari webway. A vivid emerald-green translucent. Applied over white for gem-effect Aeldari spirit stones and Wraithguard soul gems, or over silver for energy coil glows. Also used for green gemstone effects on Chaos Champions (emerald eyes, trophy gems), Necron energy crystal nodes, and Sylvaneth heartwood glowing effects in Age of Sigmar. 12ml at $4.95.

Mediums & Varnishes

Products for modifying other paints and protecting completed miniatures.

CIT27-02
Lahmian Medium
Named for the Lahmian Brotherhood — the Vampire bloodline of seductive spies. A colourless, flow-improving medium for thinning any Citadel paint without losing opacity or adhesion. Mix with Base or Layer paints to extend drying time and reduce brush marks on smooth armour panels. Mix 1:1 with any Shade paint to slow drying and reduce tide marks on flat surfaces. Mix with Contrast paints for a more controlled glaze. Indispensable for smooth blending and wet-blending techniques.
CIT27-33
Contrast Medium
The base medium used in all Citadel Contrast paints — sold separately for thinning and extending Contrast paints. Mix Contrast Medium with any Contrast paint for a more transparent, glaze-like result — useful for tinting standard Base or Layer paints with a subtle colour shift, creating shadow glazes, applying Contrast over large flat surfaces without pooling, or slowing drying time in warm conditions. Essential for advanced Contrast painting techniques.
CIT27-03
'Ardcoat (Gloss)
A high-gloss varnish that seals and protects completed miniatures with a wet, shiny finish. Used before applying washes to prevent staining (the gloss surface allows washes to flow freely and be removed if needed), to seal decals before and after application, to add a glossy, wet appearance to Blood for the Blood God effects, gemstone Technicals, and any surface that should look wet, polished, or lacquered. Apply before a final matt varnish if you want specific elements to remain glossy (eyes, gems, liquids) while the rest of the model is sealed flat.
CIT27-34
Stormshield (Matt)
Named for the Stormshield — the defensive wargear of the Stormcast Eternals. A matt varnish for sealing and protecting completed miniatures with a flat, non-reflective finish. The standard final step for any painted Warhammer model intended for gaming — protects against handling, transport, and table wear. Applied by brush or airbrush over completed models. Removes the sheen left by washes and glossy Contrast paints. Do not apply over Nihilakh Oxide, Nurgle's Rot, or Blood for the Blood God — these Technical effects should remain glossy.

Essential Technical combinations

Rust effect: Apply Typhus Corrosion to metal areas, let dry, then drybrush Ryza Rust Dry paint over the top. Add a final light drybrush of Kindleflame Dry at the most raised points for vivid, hot rust.

Verdigris bronze: Paint Warplock Bronze or Screaming Bell, shade with Agrax Earthshade, highlight with Sycorax Bronze, then stipple or wash Nihilakh Oxide into recesses.

Gemstones: Basecoat gem recess with white, apply a dot of black toward one edge, then flood with Spiritstone Red, Soulstone Blue, or Waystone Green. Seal with 'Ardcoat gloss for depth.

Basing workflow: Apply texture paste to base with a Texture Spreader. Let dry completely (1–2 hours minimum). Drybrush with 2–3 progressively lighter colours. Add static grass or tufts if desired. Seal with Stormshield matt.
