Ford's first-generation Probe arrived for 1989 as a front-wheel-drive sport coupe developed with Mazda and built in Flat Rock, Michigan, on the same platform as the Mazda MX-6 and 626. It was originally planned as the Mustang's replacement until owner backlash kept the pony car alive, leaving the Probe to carve out its own niche. The GT topped the range with a turbocharged and intercooled 2.2 litre four, sport-tuned suspension and anti-lock brakes.
