For 1968 the El Camino moved onto the new Chevelle A-body and finally got the SS treatment, which turned Chevrolet's car-truck into a genuine muscle car with a big block under the hood and the same long-hood proportions as the coupe. Chevrolet also spent those years sponsoring the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, running the event under the banner "dedicated to the youth of America," and gravity-powered derby cars were as much a part of American car culture in that era as anything with an engine. AMT's Derby Champions Kit II puts both in one box, pairing the El Camino SS with a soap box derby racer and a printed diorama of the finish line.
