Curtiss took the radial-engined P-36 and fitted a liquid-cooled Allison V-12, producing an aircraft that was fast, rugged, and well armed for its day. British Tomahawks arrived in 1941 and the earliest were relegated to tactical reconnaissance, judged unsuitable for sweeps over occupied Europe. In North Africa the type came into its own with the Western Desert Air Force, supplementing the Hurricane squadrons and taking part in driving the Italians out of Libya before facing newly arrived Messerschmitts. No. 112 Squadron's shark-mouth Tomahawks became some of the most recognizable aircraft of the war. This Airfix 1/48 kit covers a Gatwick reconnaissance aircraft and Sgt. William Earl Houston's shark-mouthed desert machine.
